ASPIRA Senior Maritime Science Instructor Essential Functions:

The Senior Maritime Science Instructor (SMSI) for the Coast Guard JROTC (CGJROTC) will serve as the instructional leader who oversees the CGJROTC unit.The SMSI will instruct and supervise participating student cadets in the subject areas of leadership, citizenship, health and wellness, maritime science, Coast Guard missions/operations/history, and related subjects. The SMSI will serve as a high-impact role model to students, instilling citizenship, responsibility, and a deep appreciation for the Coast Guard and our nation. The SMSI will also figure as a prominent and influential leader who successfully facilitates positive relationships amongst the Coast Guard, school, and local community.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Instructs cadets in the JROTC curriculum during the school year. Develops short- and long-range plans for achieving curriculum goals, gathers appropriate materials, establishes clear objectives for lessons, and formulates appropriate lesson plans.
  2. Meets and instructs assigned classes at designated locations and times. Maintains a safe and orderly learning environment.
  3. Recruits cadets and provides appropriate counseling to cadets enrolled in JROTC programs. Evaluates student progress and submit necessary government reports on a timely basis.
  4. Plans and implements instructional programs that adhere to system-wide goals and priorities and meet the needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  5. Organizes, supervises, and participates in extracurricular activities for JROTC cadets to include color guard, drill teams, and other special activities.
  6. Maintains knowledge of current professional military standards, including physical fitness requirements.
  7. Creates an instructional environment that is conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of cadets. Communicates standards, achievements, and deficiencies to students and parents. Meets with students and parents.
  8. Maintains complete and accurate student academic, attendance, and disciplinary records. Maintains JROTC student records as required by military service regulations and local policies. Monitors and assesses students’ academic progress.
  9. Oversees the appropriate use and care of textbooks, instructional materials, uniforms, facilities, and equipment.
  10. Collaborates with school administrators, other teachers, paraeducators, parents, and community members in the education of students. Attends staff meetings. Serves on various committees.
  11. Provides accurate information to any interested student about the USCG. Develops and maintains positive working relationships with the local Coast Guard recruiting office and Coast Guard Academy Admissions office in order to inform cadets about a possible career in the Coast Guard.
  12. As a retired officer of the USCG, maintains a sharp, professional appearance in uniform and personal grooming in accordance with USCG regulations.
  13. Performs such other duties as assigned by administration and Board of Education.

Qualifications:

  1. An educational minimum of a Baccalaureate Degree in any focus.
  2. Retired from USCG (active or reserve component) at the rank of W-2 to O-6, with work experience as an Active Duty or Reserve Officer. Those retired from the reserve component must be a “gray area reservists” who are not receiving pay but are retired awaiting pay.
  3. Minimum of five years served as an officer.
  4. Experience with formal classroom and informal instruction. Between structured classroom lessons, close-order drills, USCG unit field trips, and providing leadership guidance to students, the incumbent must be familiar and comfortable with various leadership, teaching, and learning styles.
  5. Familiarization with the current happenings of the USCG: operationally, administratively, and in recruiting. The incumbent will be the face of the USCG for many students who may have questions about various areas of the service.

License/Certification:

Must obtain certification as a Coast Guard JROTC instructor. To do this, applicants must contact the CGJROTC Program Manager at CGJROTC@uscg.mil and either 1) furnish a copy of their Navy JROTC Instructor Certification letter (if already Navy Certified) OR 2) furnish a completed Navy JROTC Instructor certification application to the CGJROTC Program manager.

Other Skills/Requirements:

Proficient in the use of standard computer applications. Must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Also must have the ability to work collaboratively with school administration, staff, and the service’s JROTC program leadership.

Preferred Qualifications:

Possess or can obtain a Commercial Driver’s License. Experience in the Coast Guard training community either as a Coast Guard instructor, instructional designer, master training specialist, training manager, or training supervisor. Experience in non-profit leadership, secondary education, or leadership in youth-based programs.

Physical/Mental Requirements:

Instructors must have a physical and medical fitness level that permits them to participate fully in JROTC activities. This includes but is not limited to the ability to march for at least one hour, the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, able to move boxes of curricular materials and other equipment. Possess the stamina to lead physical readiness training for a minimum of 50 minutes and able to conduct a full day’s training over a course of several days. Instructors must have the mental strength to deal with a moderate amount of stress.

Salary/Benefits:

Salary range and benefits are commensurate with qualifications and experience in accordance with
state and local salary schedules. Minimum pay for the position is computed in accordance with law
and policy governing JROTC. Tuition reimbursement is offered if eligible.
